CONCEPT and ASKS

This was an assigned project (with choice elements) in which I was prompted to create a concept for a vintage clothing app. I chose to explore something for users who enjoy shopping for preowned/vintage clothing online.

The content encourages the feeling of self-care (shopping therapy), warmth, and sophistication.
It emphasizes the eco-friendly/recycling aspect of 'reusing/repurposing" clothing instead of throwing it away.

Style
Before beginning the design process, I wanted to come to a consensus on a general design direction that would appeal to the target audience. To do this, I collected visual references from other thrift or vintage clothing
e-commerce platforms. This phase helps me clearly define the visual path of the app while also taking the client’s preferences into account.
The analogous color scheme incorporates rich green and golden/warm colors and produces a sense of harmony. Green emphasizes the eco-friendly/recycling aspect of 'reusing/repurposing" clothing instead of throwing it away.

The focus was on simple design patterns and icons that are familiar clear and consistent to clearly communicate the actions they represent.

User Flow

Hand-drawn wireframes and user flow assisted in my decision-making on the most logical method to get the user from the home page to the category page.

Challenge

The first iteration of the mid-fidelity wireframes started out with a logo that I felt was outdated. After initial user and client feedback, it was decided that it should be removed. It did not seem as if the design hierarchy was balanced and it hindered the design by becoming a focal point.

Mid/High Fidelity

Once the user research and visual direction were finalized, I created low-fidelity wireframes which then were moved into high-fidelity wireframes. The initial logo that did not work well was removed. Emphasis was placed on getting the user into that initial journey of searching for clothing through specific categories and then easing them into different segments such as strategic call-to-actions like sharing or learning.

Key Take Aways

A clean layout and earthy warm color palette help create an easy-to-navigate interface and a friendly and approachable design. Utilizing linear illustrative elements adds life and character to the site.

Based on my findings, after user testing, I focused on two primary opportunities: strategic navigation with an emphasis on guiding users through a journey that minimizes any questions on how to use the app while still conveying the necessary information.

Outcomes

Initial impressions from users have been very positive. The next steps will be collecting user feedback through additional interviews and then further iterating on the checkout, help, and profile pages.
